Ephesians 5:19-20; Colossian 3:16, 17
A Spiritual song is one that is sung with God’s Spirit and one this is sung with understanding (that is according to God’s will) or according to God’s truth. John 4:24. It doesn’t have a worldly feel or a worldly flavor. We have to be careful taking the things of the world and try to convert them into the things of God. It is a path back to the world. Some used this as an excuse to draw young people into the church. But if the Spirit of God can’t draw them, then they don’t need to be drawn. How can we tell a man not to dance and sing worldly songs and then bring the dancing and worldly songs in the church? This is confusion. We are in the world but not of the world. It is a big difference.
When the Spirit of God is in something it will do (3) things Reprove (convince) the world; 1. Of Sin – Unrighteousness and their unbelieveth in Christ 2. Of righteousness – Our songs should convince the world of God’s Righteousness 3. Of judgment – It will convince souls of God’s pending judgment and expose the devil.
A person may feel inspired to write a song, but when you add the spirit of the world to that song the inspiration of the Spirit of God departs from your effort. There are so many musical genre and formats in the world today. For example; RB (Rhythm and Blues), Jazz, Rock, Reggae, Hip Hop. These are the musical formats of the world. They are not the musical format for the church. God format or genre is Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs.
