The issue of modesty is a touchy submit and should we approached on scriptural basis and not personal convictions. Some feel that goes does care about what we wear and how we dress. The Jesus said in Matthew 6:28 “And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do thy spin. And yet I say unto you. That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, say what shall I eat? Or, what shall we drink? Or Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
The Lord does care about clothing us. According to the scripture above, God is concerned about our wellbeing, what we eat, what we drink, and what cloths we put on. Back in the book of Genesis the 3rd chapter when man sinned and lost his innocence, and come to the knowledge of his nakedness before God. He thought he could use leaves as an apron to substitute his lack of clothing. These were clothing that they had made for themselves (Genesis 3:7). God felt that they were sufficiently dress, so he made clothes for them. (Genesis 3:21). God took coats of skin and clothed them. God clothed them.
What does modesty mean?
- Good behavior, not a forward or bold, not boastful or elegant, moderate, not excess or extreme, not extravagant, not loose.
- Shamefacedness and sobriety, the whole package of the heart.
- When shamefacedness and sobriety is in the heart, it is produced through the character of clothing.
- The language of the heart is revealed in your clothing.
Apparel (Greek Word) “Kotastole”
- To deposit or put down a long robe like garment. It is the only time in all scripture that this word is used.
- It means Long & Flowing
- Modest Adorning
- Meek and quiet spirit
- It is in regards of a command in what women should wear.
- A long and flowing garment, to not revealed the contour or shape of your body for men to gaze upon.
- It’s not only a shame for a man to look at nakedness, but also to look upon the form and shape of nakedness to create a arousal within him.
- Jesus said, “He that looketh upon a woman and lust.
- Jewelry and idolatry were marks of a heathen people. Jacob knew in approaching God these things must be put away.
- The children of Israel were a stiffed neck people. As they were preparing to make their exodus to the land of Canaan they were instructed to take off their ornaments. Here we see the children of Israel was stripping themselves of their ornaments. These ornaments was associated with the evil that was in their hearts. 1 Corinthians 10:1-11 The Things in the Old Testament are written for our example.
2 Kings 9:30 (Jezebel)
Jezebel is the only person in the bible who painted her face. Jezebel in the bible is always associated with wickedness. She was used in the book of Revelation to represent a wicked church system.
Isaiah 3:16-24’ 4:4-6
Here in the book of Isaiah we see that the Prophet is speaking to the sins of Israel and the manifestation of pride in the hearts. He said because the daughters of Zion are haughty. The word haughty means arrogantly superior and disdainful, proud. Here against they displayed their pride by the ornaments and jewelry they wore.
The Lord promised in the gospel day to take away such pride among his people. Isaiah who was the gospel Prophet said in (Isaiah 3:18) In that day, referring to the gospel day that he would take away the manifestations of their pride, and ornament of jewelry. (tinkling ornaments about their feet, their cauls, and round tires like the moon, The chains, and the bracelets and mufflers, The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and tablets, and the earrings, the rings, the nose jewels,) The changeable suits of apparel, the mantles, and the wimples and crisping pins, and such like) A lot of these pieces of ornaments were Oriental objects of jewelry.
Now I know we can make excuses for ourselves of why we wear these things. What are we talking about in these verses, we are talking about pleasing the Lord, not how to get around pleasing the Lord
- Class rings
- Masonic rings
- Birthstone ring
- Friendship ring
- Engagement ring
- Wedding ring
What about the wedding ring? Do you find in the bible any sign or symbol of being married? A marriage is made up of promises and commitment, not a sign or symbol. Where did the wedding ring come from? Cardinal John Newman, he is the prince of the cardinals of the Catholic Church and he wrote a book titled; “A essay on the development of Christian doctrine”.
Cardinal John Newman said, in order for Constantine to recommend a new religion to the heathen, brought in many paganist rites into Christianity, such as;
- The Use of Temples (These that were dedicated to particular saints)
- Holy Water
- A silence procession
- Turning to the East
- Images and relics
- A ring in marriage
These things were sanctified and adopted into the church. The “Ring” represented Sun Worship. The ring originally represented the disc of the sun. It was worn by the pagans to honor their “Sun god” and they wore it regularly to be reminded of the sun, so when it was brought into the church, the Nuns adopted it and wore it to be married to Christ. Then it was passed into Protestantism as a sign of marriage.
God uses a woman to represent his church (Bride of Christ) and when the children of Israel fail to represent God, God style them as a harlot woman, one who turned away from her husband to go after her lovers, that is when she puts on her adornments. It is used in the bible as a symbol of apostasy and unfaithfulness.
Here Judah and Israel is represented as playing the harlot that is going into apostasy, and idolatry. The painting of the face and the wearing of ornaments is associated with lewd women.
When Israel went into idolatry, she always decked herself with jewelry. What is highly noted in Hosea prophecy is verse 2:13, that when they did these things, they always “forgot the Lord”.
I will therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. 9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; 10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
1 Peter 3:1-6
Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; 2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. 3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; 4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. 5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: 6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
In this scripture, we see the Apostate Church style as a woman who was arrayed in purple and scarlet color, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication. Do we see how wearing lewd clothing and ornaments are associated with that which is corrupt and out of the will of God.
